What to wear to a Pakistani wedding: a guest’s guide to colour, cut and comfort

A Pakistani wedding is rarely a single event. It is a series of them, each with its own mood, and the right outfit changes from one to the next. Here is how we think about dressing for each, whether you are a guest in Lahore or travelling from the UK, USA or the Gulf.

Mehndi

The mehndi is festive and colourful. This is the evening for brighter shades, lighter fabrics and an outfit you can move and dance in.

Nikkah and baraat

These are the most formal moments of the celebration. Choose richer colours and more embellishment, and let the handwork lead. A deep shade, such as the midnight blue of Neela Darwaza, suits an evening ceremony very well.

Walima

The walima is often softer and more elegant. Pale, watery colours such as ice blue, silver and pearl tones work beautifully, particularly in organza and chiffon. Chandni Mughal and Deewana Nigar II, both in ice blue, are good examples.
